Legislature Approves More Funds for Employer Safety Grants
Last week, the Ohio Controlling Board approved an additional $8 million in funding for the BWC’s safety grant program. The additional funding brings the total available spending on employer safety grants to $43 million in fiscal year 2024.
The BWC shared the increase is necessary because employer demand for the program now exceeds the original appropriation from their budget bill, House Bill 31. Due to demand for the safety grants, the BWC had to temporarily pause accepting applications earlier this year to ensure there was sufficient funding for each approved application.
The safety intervention grant is the most popular safety grant program and it is available to all private employers who have a workers’ compensation policy through BWC. This grant provides 3 to 1 matching dollars up to $40,000 for an employer to purchase equipment that will reduce or eliminate injuries and illness associated with their business.
Other safety grant programs include body armor grants for law enforcement, school safety measures, and firefighter personal protective equipment.
